Brake - Where and how much?

I'm going to go for a 2000 2.5TDI Q:

my wife had her winter gears screwed on on Friday and afterwards they put them in something: "...you can't drive with that anymore, the brakes are completely down that has to be done immediately, next week we have an appointment: cost 1000 euros!"

So my better half went home in a bit of a state of uncertainty and told me nothing was going any more. No part list, cost estimate, or even a note with what really to do, she has noticed. Well, I think that's the case with all the Audi factory stores, not just with Audi Frankfurt. Then yesterday I left, and I had this explained to me what is going on, and look, the car needs new windows and toilets all around, making EUR 774 in parts and "approx. EUR 300" in labour costs. On E-bay the parts are probably EUR 400 but on I do not have any balls. Is the price of Audi about real, and there are also independent factory sites in Frankfurt that can do something like that, brake change should not take some great electronics diagnosis? ATU's only doing it in front of the facelift.

If the mechanics didn't have anything to say about the 1000 euros, but that's all for the architect of the great glass palace...
