In the current Auto Motor and Sport is a report about the far too extensive engine range of the VW Group. There are some interesting details to learn, among other things, that the W8 is set, that W12 and W16 get larger cylinder distances, because otherwise the engine block does not have sufficient stiffness (so no more identical construction, like VR6...)
But what is particularly interesting for us is this. From the current S4 (chain-driven camshafts) the cylinder distance was also increased from 88mm to 92mm. For the first time since 1988, Audi has been deviating from this traditional measure. As with the large W-engines, the background is not to achieve more rigidity in the block, but to achieve more displacement by larger drilling holes in the medium term for the V8... :cool:
