Transmission oscillations

Hi,

I just bought a V8 3.6 with automatic transmission from 1992 with 140 k's on the meter. I have a minor (I think) problem - when accellerating gently the transmission/engine kind of oscillates slowly - i.e. the revs move up 200 rpms and then down - then up again this will continue until the desired cruising speed has been reached - does this have something to do with the 'lock up' in 3 and 4 ?

Also when running in 'sport' mode the gearbox will not move up to 4 gear - or I haven't driven the car fast enough - yet :-)

The original radio was missing - I then put in a Blaupunkt - and now the trip computer stopped functioning - i.e. is still displaying data - but it stopped collecting them !!

I hope some of you might be willing to share your experiencies.

Rgds.

The first Question I can’t answer perhaps a few English speaking guys from the German forum can answer your question. The second question yes I think you didn’t drive fast enough, I have experienced a similar problem (although it is not a problem) also when I placed the switch in the `S` mode. A to the last question the original radio had a speed increase/volume increase mode witch if you have replaced the radio may interfere with the board computer

In a mode S the box of transfers works only on 1,2,3
4 transfers are not present
In a mode M only 2,3
The display shows a wave only with original radio

Good to know it sounded as though my gearbox was trying to change and something was preventing it (obviously the s mode)

Hi,
the gears will switch up to the 4th in S. Just wait while going at least 100km/h or accelerate upto more than 180. Otherwise there's a problem.
Osscillating accelleration can be a symptom of a faulty lambda sensor. Just get it replaced. This thing doesn't live longer that 50000km. You can check the momentary fuel consumtion, too. If it jumps +/- 2 litre while going steady then it is the lambda for sure.
If your trip computer worked without any radio then check your wiring. Maybe one is connected wrong or you cut one while installing the radio.
Good luck

Hi guys,

Radio - It was the "speed" output that my new radio couldn't handle - this upset the trip computer. Now everything is back to normal

Oscillations - the lambda probe is not functioning correctly

4 gear - it will change to 4 at high speeds.

** All my problems solved - thank you **

Now I have another question, two questions actually ( the never ending story )

Where can I buy another Lambda probe - here in Denmark were I live -parts are ridiculously expensive. Also the center "hub cab" of the standard 16" BBS rims are missing - where can I get hold of 4 of those ?

Thanx in advance

How much is very expensive in DK perhaps we can work something out as I live in Germany. I will find out how much they are for me at cost price. I have seen some BBS centres in Germanys Ebay in the Aluminium Wheel section and accessories perhaps you could also look there

Hi,

The aluminum hub cabs are around 90 Euros a piece !
The lamba probe is 200 Euros !!!

Hi,

you can a cheap lamda probe at www.unifit.de .

You need Model "Lambdasonde - BOSCH - OX 103-B", it cost 41,90 EUR. Keep the wiring of the old lambda und connect the cables. One cable is for value transmission, the others are for the lambda heating. They can be connected vice versa, doesn't matter.

Hi !

My v8 4,2 -92 had this oscillations so I changed the lambda and now it runs steady.
But the gas consuming is oscillating plus/minus 10-20% with an frequens of aboute one minute or less.
Found on the web that the fuel pressure regulator could do something like that too.
Annyone having experience of that ?

In Sweden the lambada sond by audi dealer is about 1600SEK , makes about 150 euro.

Dismounted aircleaner top to get the partnumber for the fuel pressure regulator.
Checked hoses an so on and remounted aircleaner top.
Ordered a new regulator , will arrive next week , but now the fuel consumption isn´t varying any more.
And it seems it´s going cheaper to , during a 150km ride today.
Must have been some connector , hose or something else i touched under aircleaner top.

In my case it was a crack of the left side exhaust header beneath a welding line where all tubes come together and are going down. Check for white or black (carbone) lines near the welding.

Hi Ken,
I have a 1989 3.6. I have the exact same problem. Did you ever find out for sure if it was the "lambda probe". Where is it located and how much did you pay for a new one? Can you replace it yourself or is it a workshop job?
