Hi,
a friend of mine has a 520i Bj96 with row-six with over 300tkm on the clock and the problem that the car consumes / loses large quantities of coolant within a very short time and then of course runs hot, past last weekend at 35°+ and now the car is towed away in Hungary at a workshop.
Supposedly, the viscocoupping is fine, the cooling system is tight, the thermostat is also fine and the water pump is also OK. The water cooler just came new. I can't imagine the heat exchanger, otherwise the interior should have been a sauna. He noticed that the climate worked badly last time, but that's what I'm doing back to the high temperatures. Neither he nor the workshop have been able to detect a visible loss of cooling water.
The workshop now thinks that it can actually only be a head seal damage, and has an exchange incl. Reconditioning of the head (i.e. VSDs new, seals etc. pp.) for a fair course.
Only I ask myself: Can a defective head seal actually escape so much coolant in a short time and wouldn't it have to smoke out like wildly white at the back?
And if it isn't or can not be, what else?
Thank you for your help
Bastian

Hi Bastian,
