Hello from Canada. I have an ABH in a 94 UrS4 avant. The oil leaks from the distributor seals are dripping down onto the exhaust causing smoke and smell. I am also a bit concerned about fire. I am looking for a DIY (with photos) regarding replacement of the green and blue seals on the distributor. and Can anyone point me to such a DIY? (Please)

Hi Dave and a warm welcome!

It is not an issue to remove the distributors and their seals, nearly self-explaining, so that the procedure is not shown in the Audi repair manuals. It is only mentioned ("remove the distributor").

Remove the caps with leads first. Mind the rotor positions and undo the two fixing bolts at each distributor. Now you can dismantle them. Then remove the distributor housings at each cylinder head. You will find another seal behind it.

Here: http://www.partscats.info/ you can't find DIY instructions but images of the parts catalogue. Sometimes it is helpful.

Thanks Tim. Seems simple enough.

I see you are in somewher in Schleswig-Holstein. I once lived in Pinneberg from Oct. 1986 to Feb. 1987 when I was doing some landfill research at the University Hamburg-Harburg. I had to get leachate from the landfill (mulldeponie) at Rendsburg from time to time. On weekends, my wife and I would visit locations in the area, e.g. Bad Segeberg, Kiel, Lubeck, Flensburg, Heide, etc. so I know the area a bit. Too bad we never saw it in the spring/summer.

Anyway, again, thanks for the info. I am a total ABH V8 noob so you comments are very welcomed.

Hi Dave,

it's a small, small world ;-)
Did you study at the University Hamburg-Harburg? My son actually does (Energy- and Environmental Engineering)!

My territory is the West Coast area around Husum / St. Peter-Ording. But I often go to Heide for shopping. And due my children live in Hamburg, I also have a quick lane to this northern metropolis.

Oct.-March is the worst time (due to climate) to visit or live at North Sea side. Lot's of rain, gray sky and brown grass. But spring and summer compensate for the dark seasons.

Feel free to ask any question about your V8 (surly a rare car in Canada). But be patient, there are not so many english skilled guys in this forums. But I'm sure you will always get an answer.

Cheers

Tim: Thanks for the reply. During 1986-87 I was on sabbatical (forschungsemester) from my university teaching position in Canada (1975-90). We had spent July to mid Oct in Norway working on a project and before moving to Hamburg (U. Hamburg-Harburg) for Oct. 96-Feb.87. Then we moved down to Karlsruhe (Institut fur Siedlungswasserwerkshaft) for March-July 87.

My 94 S4 ABH V8 6spd avant is one of only 1456 that Audi built between 1992 and 1994. It is the only one in North America. It lived for 16 years in Japan before coming to Canada in 2010. I bought it here in November 2013. So new to me. (And I know very little about the V8, hence the need to ask questions here).

Hi Dave,
that sounds like a very impressive and cosmopolitan job career. You obviously have sailed the seven seas

Wish you all the best with your overseas singleton. But what about the spare parts supply for your model? Fortunately the ABH engines (and electrics) are not known as very bitchy. Normally they are pretty reliable and tough especially under your local operation conditions (speed limits).
