Hi guys, i'm new here, so let me quickly introduce myself. I'm Rico, 21 yrs old and owning an "93 v8 4.2 since february. Realy love it I actualy live like 2 km from the german border in the Netherlands, but I don't speak any German. I do understand german, so it's no problem typing german to me but i just can't myself. The car i own had no service history. I'm well known with cars so i'm fixing the car bit by bit. I've recently replaced the steering rack which suppose to be a real pain in the ass. But everything went better that expected. Now its time to replace the valve seals. The car has massive oil consumption i've probaly burned the catalytic converter already and when i'm pushing the pedal after a nice cruize it shoots bleu smoke out the back. Oil consumption is over 2l at 1000km. I'll not be taking the cylinder heads of but use compressed air to pressurise the cylinders to keep the valves shut. I'll weld something together to push the valve springs. It worked for me before so i'm trying it now again. But the timing belt gives me real issues. The belt was replaced not to long ago so i thought i would just loosen the nut on the camshaft and pull it off and place it back later. Then i remembered that audi uses that weird wax dampered tensioners on the belt. So i'm removing the belt cover. Drivers side was no problem. Took me 2 minutes but the passenger side gives me a hell of trouble. The bolt under the oil pump won't come off and i'm guessing i have to remove the front end (i really didn't want to do that) to drill out the bolt. Are there any more things that could cause me trouble? I've changed timing belt of different audi's before but never a v8 and so this is a complete mystery to me. Any tips with the valve seals are also appreciated.

Bad news, new valve seals won't help you! It's a well known issue with the 4,2 engines, especially the first couple of thousands. The common procedure is to replace the engine by an AEC from an S6, the conversion is comparable stressless.

I don't wanna disenchant you, but you save a lot of money when you don't start to change valve seals or stuff like that in order to significantly reduce the oil consumption. It won't work out (you are by far not the first one trying)!

How far away are you from Elmsland? We've an expert there, unfortunately he is a physically a bit handicapped at the moment, but he would definetely help you on switching the engine when he is restored again, I'm sure.

Hello Rico,

Like Bastian already suggested, indicate more precise (city/village) where you live, so that members who live close by (over the border) can contact you.

Oil consumption is not unusual for a 4.2, although the later ones ('93/'94) should be better in this respect. How many km's did yours do?
2 liter /1000km is not extreme, how did you measure? I ask, since some overhere are of the opinion, that the difference between min and max on the dip-stick is less than 2 litres.

I am not a mechanic myself, but I understood, that the timing belt change on the V8 is not a straigtforward job. You are advised to use the special tools, instead of marking the respective engine parts with paint.
In the meantime you can find a lot of material on the "Zahnriemen" (ZR) through the searchfunction, since you read German.

Veel plezier,
Eric

..unfortunately Bastian is right about the oil consumption issue. My 4.2 also burns a lot of oil and i tried the same procedure last year. I removed the cylinder heads, took out all the valves, cleaned everything nice and shiny and put it all together with new valve seals. For a few thousand, the engine only took a litre on thousand km, put after that, same problem as usual...

Some people also make the valve guides responsible for that, most agree that clean / new piston rings lower oil consumption. Many discussions about that, besides that only those, who upgraded to the aec are happy now with the oil thing.

Downloading the Reperaturleitfaden also referred to as RLF will give you a hand changing the timing belt (if it needs to be changed)

So long
