As a long-time V8 driver I have been playing with the idea of buying an A8 for a long time. Yesterday I was able to find an A8 Bj at a dealer near us (not a classic "fähnchen" dealer but a serious supplier of well-kept Audi and VW models). 6/96 4.2 ltr., 200,000 km, 2. Hand, thoroughly tested and even look at my own pit from below. Overall the car is good in shot but I noticed some things, where I wonder if it justifies the price of 9800.-:
1
The beige leather is already very used up. It already has strong dirt grooves, which cannot be removed with leather care products. Is this the same for all A8s with corresponding mileage? With my V8 the leather looks like new - and it has 215,000 on it
2
At the pit I could detect a slight oil loss - and in the direction of travel, behind the engine encapsulation on the left. Fresh, yellow oil drops could be seen here on two black lines. But the drops themselves came from above. The dealer thinks it comes from the left valve cover seal (but wants to have it checked again). There were no tracks from the engine compartment. Could it be a broken seal between. To be engine and gearbox? That was at least the reason for the end of my first V8, but only at 360,000.

The fan wheel squeales, sometimes it stops or runs quite loud. The dealer thinks you could change that easily with the A8. Is that true?
4
The A8 is fully equipped (it ran first with Sixt as a rental car and these A8 were always fully equipped). Even the Navi of the 1. Generation and a solar roof is there. But imagine that almost all offered A8s are very well equipped, right?
5 gearboxes and motor are inconspicuous (except for the powerful thrust when overtaking
)However, if you tap the accelerator pedal only briefly from Tempo 40 (without load), a hard transition with audible "stroke" in the drive train is noticeable. Maybe I hear too much here. But it doesn't quite fit into the picture, because the transitions are jerk-free and butter-soft when switching. The phenomenon described is normal and suggests a possible. Defect in the automatic or in the drive train?
I know it has become a novel, but I would be very pleased about one or the other hint, which I am interested in buying or selling. Non-purchase decision facilitated.
Yours sincerely,
Andi
