I'm rather cynical when it comes to the majority of garages, repair shops, etc. I get the impression that many are really just component fitters, and lack the skill for proper repairs.
Finding a complete, new shaft at sensible price may be difficult or impossible. Fitting a used one may leave you open to the same problems soon.
Find a local driveshaft specialist, and see what they say.
