My car (3.6 aut 92) has had a rumbling noise that follows the speed of the car for some time. It turns out that it's probably the universal joint on the driveshaft (the driveshaft is properly aligned) - as far as I can make out Audi doesn't sell the universal joint by itself - you must buy a complete driveshaft. Since the universal joint can be removed I'm wondering if anybody knows if it's possible to get a spare part from another vendor ...

Are you sure that it's the U joint and not the front CV joint?

No I'm not - can the CV joint be bought separately - or is there anything that can be done about it - short of changing the whole axle assembly ?

Hi KEn,
did you check the center bearing?

this bearing is located in the center of the shafts on all type44 quattros and is surrounded by a rubber insulator.

if the rubber cracks, breaks, wears out ....etc..
the bearing starts ridding on the bearing support and vibration is transferred over to the Chassis ...BUT noramlly for you have this you have to do allot of Miles/Kilometeres to see this kind of event.

You can buy the center bearing separately from one company in the US ..BLAUFERGNUGEN!!!

If you need more details let us know.

Paul

One other possibility is the rubber doughnuts that suspend the exhaust system from the chassis. These can stretch over time and cause the exhaust system to rub (vibrate) on the cross brace.

Hope that helps,
