Yes, all. My madness knows no bounds. A second V8 to join my stable soon.

It is a 3.6. 1991model. Similar spec to my 1990 model, but with some of the later updates- such as gas-dampers for the bootlid.
A photo shoot will have to happen before both head for extended storage- I'm either going away for work, or they will lock me up indefinitely.

Well, After a short while being too busy- the result is

A Metallic Black, 1991 3.6 V8. Overall, similar spec as my silver one-
Grey leather, memory heated seats.
Additionally, full remote alarm with closure function.

Generally, runs like a bag of nails. Bent and blunt nails at that.
Starts fine. Albeit after a couple of seconds cranking. battery is the wrong capacity too.
Running wise- it revs from idle, but does not sound clean.
In gear, it doesn't accelerate very well, and feels rough. At 3000rpm, it's fine, but still sluggish acceleration.
A clean up and check over of all of the sensors, rotors, plugs, leads is needed.

Fuel consumption is very high. 17mpg @ 60.

Brakes
Hmm. It does stop. Think Titanic...
Fairly sure one caliper is rather lazy.

Gearbox
Paperwork shows an expensive rebuild in it's life, but it doesn't shift as well as the other car. Sport mode doesn't function. (throttle switch/pot?) Used in manual selection releases a bit more of the hidden horsepower (not so much horse power as 3-legged donkey power)

The shift selector is the later version that won't release the key unless it's in park. That works. However, it doesn't always indicate 'P', so starting has to be done in Neutral sometimes. I presume adjustment is required.

It needs a good cleanup, but otherwise is solid.
Ride is fine, currently running on 17inch A8 alloys

I've also acquired the camshaft alignment tools, a complete new undertray.

So, all in all, the verdict is-

I'm utterly insane!

Mark,

you're _indeed_ insane? Don't want alter '93 or don't they come by any more in the UK?

I would check the engine timing, maybe it's off a bit, could be a reason for the poor acc.

Pictures, Sir?

Regards and happy to have at least one addict in the kingdom

I keep promising pictures, but never get around to it. So I won't promise.

Both cars are full of junk, and look tatty right now.

Timing. I shall take a look at it in due course. It almost feels as if it is firing on 7, not 8.
Much work to do.
The headlining in the new car is hanging low at the back. Just the material cover. Flapping loose.

As for later cars. I looked at a Ragusa green, 4.2. Described as being in pretty good condition.

I fixed or diagnosed half the instruments in the process of looking it over. Just to determine if it had any oil pressure. It was actually oil tight.
But the car was falling apart, and needed a full strip to bare shell. The paint looked like someone had started rubbing it down, already.
He wanted double it's worth, and wouldn't sell to me. Fair enough. I think it's been sold and broken now.

At some stage in the past, the heads have been rebuilt, new seals, gaskets. Documented. I think in the main, it has just sat neglected for too long.

I'm an optimist.

Ok, but you still do not know what the preowner hat done with the car.
maybe it runs with new sparkplugs, ignition wires, caps and distributors fine again or worst case szenario.

Indeed.
I start tackling it in earnest, tomorrow. A number of items to attack. Already, it's driving a little better. It's a little touchy when the connections to the idle stabiliser is wiggled.
The air temp sensor connections are looking a little ropey, and I'm sure there's something lurking in the plug to the throttle pot/switches.

For starters.

At least the handbrake works! But then, at present, only gravity has a chance of overcoming it. Engine power is currently insufficient.

Some of it, I already knew about, but had forgotten. Like the air temp sensor wiring.
Some of it has become more apparent as I have been fiddling.

The problem with working away from home a lot, is not having the kit and space that is normally available. So it's a check and make do, mostly.
I can see the Audi Workshop manual being put to some use.

In the very near future, I shall be changing over the brakes, as with the silver car.

Choices are-
HP2/S6 struts as before. Very easy to do, with minimal workshop space. The last set, I obtained for £200, Brakes, struts, disks, pads complete. This is preferred for now, as it would keep commonality with the 2 cars. A bit rare over here.

Or

Porsche calipers. 993s can be found for sensible money, work with the S6/A8(et al) discs. So I would just need mounting brackets.
Or, the uber sexy 6pot caliper, from the larger machines in VAG group.

I would take the easier way with the HP2 Brakes, for 200GBP is very cheap.
My HP2 had cost years ago approx. 400€ with out disks and pads.

A with all things, first things first.
The car was running on 7 cylinders, sometimes only 6.

A dodgy HT lead- very expensive 10mm custom leads, but badly assembled. So the spark was breaking down to #4. More curious is #8- it doesn't appear to be getting any fuel.
So, time to make another codes lead.

But, currently, it's running so much better, with improved fuel consumption. So, it's going in the right direction.

The throttle pot/switch is an issue- or rather, the completely messed up wiring, which has 5 soldered repairs. Not good ones either.

New fault found.
Dodgy connection to the switch at the top of the steering rack. Fixed that, now have Hydraulic system warning on the instruments.

And currently, there is no signal to front left indicator, and is proving a sod to find.

It looks to me like someone was in trying to mess with alarm systems among other things. There's a fair bit of documentation for the Audi Alarm system, dealer upgraded. But what I have found so far was installed by a half blind, one armed chimp- I've found a dozen odd insertions and random repairs. It's a shame really, as the supporting receipts showed it had been fairly well maintained up until about 20Kmiles ago.

...and then it started to fall apart!

None of it is insurmountable. It's a fairly tight car, needing some work and tidying. And it takes the pressure off while I tackle the oil leak on the other one.

Right. A year on, but I have a decent garage, and enough space to start working.

First up. Ignition issues.
I mentioned the plug leads? Well, they were all a problem. Fortunately, I have a full set of spares. Now all replaced.

Distributor caps. Brand new both sides, fitted by someone a very short time before I bought it. But one (left) looks like this-

And the CTP/WOT wiring was nasty like this

I also found the right distributor hall sensor connection was broken loose.
This I still have to investigate further- I have a good replacement distributor fitted, but still code 2113 is appearing.

Oil leaks at the back of the head appear to be cam shaft seal/distributor outlets.

So, with some significant, but temporary wiring repairs, it starts and idles much better.

CTP/WOT definitely works, but. I have yet to test if the ECU is even seeing these.

Wiring issues investigated in the front bumper show simple connection issues of the multiple on the right chassis rail, where the bumper harness attaches. S indicators work, but one fog light connection in the harness is high resistance on both live and ground. So a new section of wiring to be run in.

This car does not have headlamp wash wipe, but the connections are there. I may look at installing these...

You should look on the steering bars, they maybe fitted wrongway... it sounds stupid, but it isn't impossible...

Excuse me for missing the reference, but steering bars affecting what issue?

The car handles, and steers fine.

If the steering bars have been inserted "upside down", then they might touch the distributors... of course this will damage the distributors, I remember having seen some pictures from other guys here, showing similar destruction than yours...

Ah, I see.
Thanks for the heads up, guys. The left steering arm does look very clean (new? We'll see). It didn't seem like there was any chance for them to interfere.
The car hasn't been on the road for a year, so memories of it are a little vague.
I'll investigate tomorrow.

Well, the steering arms appear to be fine. I suspect it was some ham fistedness in fitting the cap.

Today's new issue encountered is electrical

Th car has a socket for an immobiliser or transponder of some sort. But no key for it. No problems to date, until I managed to set the alarm off. And it won't reset, without disconnecting the battery.
Loads of extra wiring. And a large short circuit in the the loom served by fuse 21.

I shall have to go in with my wire cutters.

Happily, though, it seems that my wiring repairs have resulted in better starting and running.
