Hi!
plese help my wiht my 3.6L v8 '89.I changed the engine oil witth Aral 10W40 and after 300km the hidraulic valve lifters begun to click like a sewing machine.they click much when the car is stationary....but if i keep my foot (in P) at 2000rpm after 30seconds the engine become very smooth and the click dissapears....if a take my foot off the click reappers.
I put Liqui Moly Hydro StoBeeal additive designed for cleaning the hidraulic lifters....and the click noise became sensitive more low...but the engine still click
Do you thing that the Aral 10W40 is the wrong oil 4 this car?
what should I do?

Hi Julian,
I think the ARAL Oil is ok, but it sounds like very low oil-level.
You are sure, oil-level is correct?

Sorry for this question...

Hhmm,
that was my first opinion, the second one is missing ; I'm no mechanic, but what about other parts (oil-pump broken or something else ?). Wait for answer, you will get information from our "specialists" here on this board

u have to take your friend and put him at the front and let he is listening for noise when u r steping tha gas! It can be propeller for radiator, it can waterpump, it can be generator, it can be may be your timing belt which can be gone in the very next future! Be carefull!

I already do that....the sound comes from the engine, from the hidraulic lifters is no doubt

Hi Iulian,
I guess you checked all the basic stuff: source of noise, engine oil level, engine oil pressure (after the engine is at ideal temperature), engine oil consumption, correct cylinder firing sequence, etc.. You can also go by the process of elimination and change the oil again with whatever type you used before, even though chances are that the type of oil is not the real issue here. Also tell us if you changed the oil filter
and the mileage of the car. It is also worth doing a compression test on all cylinders to see the status of your engine.
To be honest I think that your hydraulic valve lifters need either adjusting or replacing. For that, even though according to my mechanic it is a simple procedure, I would suggest that you go to somebody who knows the V8. And in Romania that might not be the Audi dealership. You can also contact me @flman@telus.net.
Good luck,
Florin

I also think that all u can do is replace the lifter(s).

Normally if hydraulic valve lifters start to make sound, they are done. They work with oil, and lack of oiling may cause that it wont hold the pressure even if it had oil in it. You shouldn't drive too much when they click, because it always chews a little the nose in your camshaft. Lifters have really small oil channels, it may have been small impurity in the oil or too long milage between oil change that caused the problem.

currect me if i'm wrong

any who, good luck dude

kari

Before I was using Mobil 1 0W40,and then i changed the oil with Aral 10W40+new filter,1.000km ago.I checked all the basic stuff but not the compression test. The car has 187 000km....
It's very weired....because the click nois has appeared verry sudden, before with Mobil1 oil engine was running very fine.
the oil consumption is about 1L/1000km.
Even with the click noise engine is very powerfoul,it starts with no problems, runs very fine....
As I was saying before I put an oil adittive ,Liqui Moly Hydro StoBeal(speccialy designed for cleaning the lifters),and recently the engine doesn't click if I run out of town at least 10 minutes minutes over 100km/h...and then if I drive normaly in town the clik noise is stii gone.but...the nexy day in the morning the click noise reapppears and I have to drive out of town with speed to lose it...
Florin, please tell me the procedure of change the hydraulic lifters...
guys,do you think is something wrong with the Aral oil?,is iti too thick?,is the lubrification bad??Now in romania the outside temperature is about 7-8 degrees C. If i change it with mobil 1 0W40 it's possible to lose the noise definitely?

For changing the valve lifters you would have to get advice from somebody who has more knowledge in this. Another suggestion I have would be to clean your engine with a good product, drain it and then change with a good quality synthetic oil, maybe a 5W40, slightly thinner. When you clean the engine follow the instructions accurately, most of these products prohibit you from driving the car or raising the RPM above 1500. The aditive that you used might not be strong enough to clean the oil paths since it appears that you didn't have to drain it immediately.

If u were using 0W40 fully synthetic that was not so good idea! That oil is too good for such an old car! It stays in the bottom of the engine and the top of the engine stays dry! U have to drive to pick it up! Has your engine oil flowing anywhere? When I bought my car there was no flowing! I changed old oil to synthetic it started! Too good oil for such an old car... engine wants to push it out! That is what the mechanics said to me!
