Hi all!

Bought an old 100 2.3 sometime ago really cheap just to have a comfortable cruiser on the motorway.. couple of years later after running it with absolutely no problems I turned into loving the model/make/year... so decided I wanted to keep it. However, the 2.3 is not the "right" model to keep - so went looking...

Found this '93 november V8 4.2 Quattro @ 217.000km equipped with almost everything: Heated locks, Sunroof, Automatic, Sunblinds, memmory seats etc.. so went on and bought it this friday, changing in my old 100.
Spending the weekend cleaning it and doing a little repair I found myself back on the motorway enjoying the comfort...and now the "umpf" too

Currently I will be driving it daily the next two years, and after that I want to put it in my workshop and dissassemble it completely for restauration.
That requires some fixing right now:
- Timing belt replacement with all tensioners
- New brakeshoes in front
- New front tires (18", 225/35)
- Cruise control fixing
- Complete fluids change (Gearbox shifts harshly in in 1-2 downwards/Engine/Coolant/Brake/Aircon)
- Filters replacement (Air/Cabin/Oil/Fuel)
- Sparkplugs.
Anything else anyone thing should be done before a two-year daily-use cycle begins?

Will update on here with experiences, lessons learned and definetely ask for advice from time to time, when the need occurs.

First off: Anyone has a service manual/repair manual for this model? (V8 4.2 Quattro automatic 1993/11).
Strangely(to me) it shows km/h but the onboard computer shows mpg - does this indicate a switch of some sort?

Glad to find the forum - and other lovers of this fabulous car!

Regards
Brian Weber

Got around to a little more fixing this sunday;

Rear seat heating now works again - faulty connectors.
Window switch in drivers side for passenger window now works fully again.
Radio transmits to all speakers again (lots of bad connections) - still needs some work on isolating them so the "whine" from the generator will go away + new speakers in front doors.. Bass is broken.

Tried some fault finding on the cruise control, the switch in the multi arm works fine, but unsure about the brake pedal switch - anyone knows how to check? If not there it must be somewhere in the engine compartment (perhaps a vacuum that's missing somewhere?)

Talked to an automatic gearbox specialist regarding the tranny - their guess was a faulty valve house and/or oil/filter change badly needed. (hope no clutches are burnt!)

Have a good weekend out there - and thanks for the welcoming PM's!

In the PDF file of the manual! There are some checks for cruise control.
In the case of the car that I dismantled, it proved to be a bad connection in the switch on the steering column. A contact had physically broken away from the switch and was trapped in the multiplug. It made contact but only just.

There is a Suppression r on the chassis arm, adjacent to the alternator. Is it connected?

I saved the gearbox from the 1993 4.2quattro. Currently for sale.

Thx for the tips!
The previous owner said it felt like the cruise control lost it's breath once in a while, until it finally stopped working.. leaves him and me thinking it might be something pressure related. Will try to look at the connections at the arm again and check the connector at the chassis.
Which PDF manual are you referring to? I (gratefull for getting it) recieved one in english from scanned microfice, that's out of order in the pages + its scanned pictures so searching itsn't possible... Do you have the "real" pdf (in english..)?

Again - love this forum and the involvement from people inhere. GR8!

Regards,
Brian

Ps: Changed the sparkplugs this morning.. think they were due (see the picture attached). Should I be concerned that those from the two rear cylinders look so much poorer than the rest?

Sorry, I also only have the scanned microfiche, so searching on text is not available. But the index is useable to some extent.

In the contents tab, it gives fiche 3 for electrical, along with alternator, battery etc.
Cruise control is in section 27-120. About 8pages of a flow diagram, with some pin checks, etc.

Here is a useful site for some diagnostics-
http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/trouble_shooting/ecufv8.html

The link takes you straight to the V8 stuff. US market, mainly. But there's useful detail in there.

Whine.
There was a comment in my previous post about a suppressor mounted under one of the chassis rails, near the alternator. On my vehicles, this was disconnected every time. Probably because the wiring is a bit cramped, or forgetfulness after swapping an alternator.
